In applications where high torque is required at low speeds (10-300 rpm) such as wave energy generation systems, the optimal shape of an electrical machine is a ring-shape. Such machines are often called “rim machines”. They are naturally suited for integration into mechanical structures and can be adapted for different kinds of cooling.
