SmartMotor has designed and manufactured numerous permanent magnet based electical machines with drives and controls for our customers. Most machine designs are customised to specific applications, often operating in very harsh and demanding environments.
In close cooperation with our customers, we provide new solutions or typically the replacement of existing hydraulic, mechanical and induction-based machines. Our technology and designs provide numerous benefits, such as reduced costs and improved efficiency. Our solutions are reliable and environment-friendly.
SmartMotor is focusing on 3 industrial verticals; Marine, Renewable and Oil & Gas. The key reasons for prioritising these verticals are
- High demand for Permanent based technology systems
- Proximity to and longstanding relatons with core customers and industrial clusters
- Extremely demanding, harsh environments with high synergies and transfer value of knowledge and IPR
10 MW Wind Turbine
Design and construction of the drivetrain for the world’s largest wind turbine – 10 MW. This wind turbine will be the largest of its kind in the world, with a rotor diameter of 145 meters. The concept targets reducing turbine weight and the number of moving parts, as well as the use of a gearless, direct driven generator system.
This new technology will be tested on land over the next two years. The Norwegian state-owned funding agency, Enova is contributing towards this project.
Tidal Turbine
1.1 MW, submerged Permanent Magnet generator for tidal generation. Delivery included not only the generator but also the converter and the Scada control system as a customised electrical package solution.
Design, development and delivery of the generator system was completed within 9 months. This was an achievement made possible by the dedicated team from SmartMotor working closely together with the customer’s team to reach the target delivery time. For this and other deliveries SmartMotor was awarded "supplier of the year" at the 2010 Annual Tidal Summit in London, UK.
Downhole Drilling Tool
Design, development and manufacture of the electrical motors, power supply and control systems for a downhole drilling tool used for the exploration and verification of oil and gas prospects. This tool will autonomously drill in a closed cavity by compacting the drilled out cuttings at its tail and closing the hole behind it while unwinding an electrical cable for power transmission and communication to surface. The tool thus buries itself underground and is equipped with numerous sensors which measure and register vital formations and physical data.
Hard Rock Drilling
Design, development and manufacture of an electrically powered drilling machine with drives and controls. This equipment is typically deployed for drilling tunnels 700 mm in diameter and up to 300 m long. Typical applications are complete eco-friendly waterways for small hydro power plants.
Subsea Converter
Provision of software platform for subsea converter. Delivery includes software for Texas DSP framework and platform, DSP Control Library controlling subsea current source. Scope for control includes a generator, excitation systems for hydro power, a High Current Rectifier and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).
Bow Thruster
SmartMotor has developed a unique rim drive tunnel thruster with an applied product range of 800 kW to 4 MW. The fully integrated thruster provides benefits such as reduced fuel consumption, no gears, greater efficiency, silent operation, ease of maintenance, high degree of reliability and no rotating seals.
Anchor Handling Winch
140 kNm radial flux permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for anchor handling winch applications. This extreme torque machine provides full torque up to 75 rpm and speeds of up to 3 times the nominal speed through field weakening. SmartMotor technology creates high winch efficiency, and a light weight rotor design with direct drive provides excellent dynamic characteristics due to the low resultant torque of inertia.
AUV Propulsion System
Design and manufacture of submerged propulsion system for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle. The propulsion system has been designed to meet demands for extremely high efficiency. By engaging in close cooperation with the customer, SmartMotor was able to double the efficiency of the propulsion drive by deploying our patented PM design and by operating the motor with an advanced sensorless optimal control system. The system has been operated down to a depth of 4500 metres.

Tailor-made Compact Integrated Converter System
Compact Integrated AC-DC-AC Converter System for 690 Vac in the power range up to 500 kW.
This delivery included the complete design and construction of control hardware and software, gate drivers and a power circuit.
Tailor-made converters provide flexibility for the customer in respect of flexible size, special control algorithms and overall reduced costs.
Wave power system
Design and development of a complete system for the extraction of power from ocean waves. This system includes a winch generator, a system of buoys, a monitoring system and submerged power and control electronics.
Multi turn Actuator
Multi-turn actuator, Smactuator (TM), delivering 250 Nm at any speed within the operational range. It can be operated in a master slave system in the most demanding environments. The Smactuator is a tested stand-alone product. It features a unique and compact design ensuring HSE requirements during manual operation. The system has robust communication, internal CAN bus and position control.
